Investment Approach

I invest in pre-seed/seed-stage startups with strong network effects — take a look at my essays to understand what that means. Beyond that, here are a few more characteristics I look for:

Mostly HQed in Europe
Unique, structured, multiplayer interaction
- Every network effect is built around a multiplayer interaction; if that interaction isn’t unique, you’re probably competing against another network effect
Post-MVP, with early users and behavioural/product metrics, i.e. engagement and retention metrics that validate the interaction with a meaningful sample size
- Growth isn’t really a meaningful signal for a pre-seed/seed-stage network; neither is a 5-year forecast
- “Market sizing” isn’t a signal either; it’s astrology for VCs — entertaining, but not useful
Missionaries, not mercenaries, i.e. founders that have a relationship with the problem
- I want to understand why this is important to you — irrespective of your gender, ethnicity or background

I'm a low volume, high conviction, and typically non-consensus investor. I target 2-4 high conviction deals/year (<1% of the deals I see). This allows me the time and space to help, talking through metrics, product & growth.
